No. 5 Indiana held off a second-half comeback by Northwestern to secure a 29-23 victory in its Big Ten Conference opener on Friday night at Memorial Stadium. Running back Lee Beebe Jr. delivered a standout performance, rushing for 203 yards and a touchdown as the defending national champions extended their winning streak to 20 games.
Indiana entered the matchup unbeaten but faced a determined Northwestern side that nearly overturned a 12-point halftime deficit. The Wildcats scored 23 second-half points, repeatedly cutting into Indiana’s lead before the Hoosiers secured the victory in the closing seconds.
Indiana Takes Control Before Halftime
Indiana opened the scoring after Northwestern quarterback Aidan Chiles fumbled a snap near his own goal line, resulting in a safety.
Nico Radicic extended Indiana’s advantage with a 43-yard field goal early in the second quarter. Quarterback Josh Hoover subsequently connected with Nick Marsh for an eight-yard touchdown, sending the Hoosiers into halftime with a 12-0 lead.
Northwestern responded after the break. Chiles connected with Griffin Wilde for two touchdown passes, reducing Indiana’s lead to 15-13 early in the fourth quarter.
The Wildcats attempted a two-point conversion to level the game, but Indiana’s defense stopped Chiles short of the goal line.
Lee Beebe Jr. Delivers Decisive Performance
With starting running back Turbo Richard sidelined by an injury, Beebe took on a larger offensive role.
His four-yard touchdown run restored Indiana’s advantage to 22-13 before Northwestern responded with another touchdown to make it 22-20.
Beebe then produced the game’s decisive offensive play, breaking free for a 70-yard run that moved Indiana deep into Northwestern territory.
